What is a sinus lift surgery?

The maxillary located in the sinus area, directly above the upper jaw, are the anatomical cavities that are located near our molars.

The task of these cavities in the vicinity of our molars is important as they are responsible for reducing noise and head weight. The sagging of the sinus cavities creates some loss of bone volume. Although this loss is considered a natural process, it is a problem in implant treatment. Sinus grafting is used to apply implant treatment as a result of filling sagging sinus cavities in toothless areas. As a result of this process, sufficient volume is created for the length and width of the implant, which must be placed completely in the bone. Local and general anesthesia is performed during the sinus lift.
The air spaces, which are responsible for reducing the weight of the head in the skull and ensuring that the correct sounds are heard, are called sinuses. Since some of the sinuses are near our teeth, they are important from this point of view as well. If the teeth on the upper jaw (maxillary) in the rear area of the jaw are lost and prostheses have not been inserted in their places in time, there is a shortening between the distance between the sinus wall and the tip of the jawbone, which is called the crest tip. Since there is not enough bone for an implant in this area, a sinus lift is performed to increase the bone in proportion to the reduced bone.

How is the sinus lift operation performed ?

The sinus lift operation (elevation, elevation of the sinus) is a surgical procedure that usually takes place under local anesthesia in the standard dentist’s bed.

The sinus area is raised to the desired height and made accessible through the mouth by opening a small window in this area. After the sinus membrane, which includes the interior of the sinuses, has also been increased in the desired ratio, the bone powder and grafting process takes place in the cavity that has been created and the area is closed by sutures.

What should you watch out for after the sinus lift operation?

After the sinus lift operation, the other side should be eaten for 24 hours to protect the wound area. After the procedure, you are not allowed to eat or drink anything for two hours. After the sinus lift, care must be taken not to let pressure arise when blowing your nose and the mouth should remain open while sneezing.
